WAVE CARVER

BIG BROTHERS HAVE IT MADE. OR SO IT IS THOUGHT, AT LEAST
by their younger brothers. You know the deal: Big Bro gets
the first bike, the first job, the first
car, the first girl. And every year, all
the way through school, it’s the same
thing: Li’l Bro has to listen to some
teacher say, “Oh, you’re so-and-so’s
little brother?” And that invariably
is followed by either, “I’m expecting
so much out of you,” or “I’ll be
watching you.”
Expecting much, everyone watched
Wave Carver last year. Bred by Dan
Lucas’ Lucas Racing Inc. of New
Market, Maryland, the sophomore colt
by First Down Dash is the younger full
brother to champion Ocean Runaway,
who won the 2005 Champion of
Champions (G1) by a half length but
lost the world title by a whisker to a
triple crown winner.
A finalist in the 2005 Ed Burke
Million Futurity (G1) and Governor’s
Cup Futurity (RG1), Wave Carver finished second in champion
Higher Fire’s Golden State Million Futurity (G1) and in
his last out at 2 won the Los Alamitos Million Juvenile
Invitational (RG3). Racing for a syndicate that included
Lucas, Vaughn Cook, Gary Muller and Frank “Scoop” Vessels
III, the colt opened his sophomore campaign with a victory
over Startlet Hawk in the trials to the Los Alamitos Winter
Derby (G1), but swapped places and finished second to the
Hawkinson gelding in the February 24 final. Wave Carver
then scored three consecutive wins, taking his trial and the
final of the July 29 Governor’s Cup Derby (RG1) and his trial
to the Golden State Derby (G1), though Startlet Hawk
caught him at the wire and beat him by a nose in the
September 2 Golden State final. Wave Carver next won his
trial and the November 3 Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1) and
finally scored a nose victory over former world champion Be
A Bono, Country Chicks Man, Apollitical Time, Strawkins
and others in the December 9 Champion of Champions (G1).
Conditioned by Paul Jones and ridden by Ramon Sanchez,
Wave Carver finished the season with a record of seven wins and
two seconds from nine races, for earnings of $739,036. The stallion
left the track with a career mark of 11 wins and five seconds
from 18 starts, with only two off-the-board finishes and total
earnings of $1,011,196. Owned by a syndicate managed by
Lucas, Wave Carver now is at stud at Royal Vista Ranches near
Wayne, Oklahoma.
“It’s pretty special to be involved in a horse like this,” Lucas
said. “It’s like I said before: You plan for this, you try and you
do everything possible, and you don’t really believe it could
ever happen. And it has; we’re very pleased.”
Like big brother Ocean Runaway, Wave Carver is out of
Runaway Wave, a winning daughter of Runaway Winner
who was bred by Lucas and his former wife, Allison. The
2005 broodmare of the year, Runaway Wave has produced
five winners from six starters that have earned $2,739,705.
