Frank “Scoop” Vessels III was reportedly killed in a plane crash near Burns, Oregon.

Vessels and a friend, Sam Cannell, were returning to Redding, California, from a fishing trip when the plane went down near Burns, Oregon, according to sources. It is believed there was an unknown third person on board that was also killed.

Los Alamitos Race Course Racing Secretary Ron Church has revealed his preliminary list of invitees to the Grade 1 Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship and the nation’s top two older horses are part of the list.

Freaky, currently ranked number one in the AQHA Racing-HorseplayerPRO.com poll, and Jess You And I, the second ranked Quarter Horses, could meet for the first time this year in what could be the biggest race for older horses so far this year.

Sam Houston Reinstates Two Stakes

TQHA has provided additional purse money to Sam Houston Race Park allowing the track to re-instate two graded stakes races to the 2009 American Quarter Horse meet, which runs through August 29.

The money provided by the TQHA will allow Sam Houston to hold the Governors’ Cup Marathon (G3), an 870-yard race for horses ages 3 and up, on Friday, August 21; and the Sam Houston Classic (G2), a 440-yard race for horses ages 3 and up, on Saturday, August 22.

Sam Houston announced the elimination of three stakes races from the summer meet on June 25, in an effort to minimize the purse cut to the overnight races as well as noting the adverse affects of Hurricane Ike, which forced the cancellation of the 2008/2009 Thoroughbred meet.

“Losing any stakes races is extremely difficult and losing two graded stakes races was something the TQHA felt was not an option at this time,” said Rob Werstler, Executive Director, TQHA. “Achieving graded stakes status is becoming increasingly difficult so we felt it was imperative to keep races like the Governors’ Cup Marathon and the Sam Houston Classic. These are important races for the owners and breeders in Texas.”

Blanchet Farms to Host Annual Yearling Showcase July 21

Blanchet Farms’s will host their ninth annual Yearling Showcase on July 21st at the farm near Ville Platte, Louisiana.

Blanchet Farms is home to A Royal Symphony, First Comment, Fishers Dash, Gros Oreille, Hotdoggin, King Corona and Look Forward.

The Quarter Horse named “Silent Cash Dasher”

There are horses that live to race, and Silent Cash Dasher appears to be one of those. Sam Houston Race Park had a quarter horse racing at the age of 10 and there were murmurs among those who didn’t know the horse that maybe it was time to retire him. With that kind of pressure, the trainer and owner did just that; turned him out.

“You never saw a horse mope in the pasture as much and for as long as he did,” said his trainer. “So we decided to compromise and bring him back to the track as a pony horse. But when we did that, he still wasn’t happy. He wanted to race. So when he turned 12, we brought him back to race.”

That quarter horse won four races in a row at 12 the summer he raced at Sam Houston.
